You’re Asking Me To Be Rational
Today Annika sent me a message that said, “You almost lost me when you said you’re not a Star Wars fan. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?”
Honestly, I’m not really sure. I can tell you that I’d never seen any of the SW movies until I was 20 years old. That was when an obsessed friend insisted on watching the first three movies last three movies three movies made 20 years ago all in one sitting.
And I was into it — for real! I remember that night distinctly, because we were both out of cigarettes and bummed unfiltered Chesterfield Kings from a friend, which we poked holes in to make them inhale-able.
Then, right about the time Vader and Luke were in the middle of that big-ass fight, the friend insisted we go to Taco Bell.
I’m not shitting you. As such, I have never seen Vader drop the daddy bomb on Luke. (I haven’t seen it, but I know it happens. I mean, I haven’t been comatose for the last 25 years.) And I guess I just never really got into SW as a result.
My lack of interest in SW strikes even me as strange; I love sci-fi, and I usually dig fantasy. I crave well-told, epic stories. And Lord knows I’m a sucker for most geekdom.
But the truth is, I prefer Star Trek.
And now that I’ve said that, I suspect it’s a lot like when I extol the virtues of Buffy, only to have people reply, “Buffy‘s okay, but Charmed is a lot better.”
At which point I either dry heave or curse loudly.
I haven’t posted in awhile, and I likely won’t be for awhile longer. But I’ve got plans, people. BIG plans.
Just now when I looked for a Star Wars-themed title for this post, I ran across the “Fear leads to anger…” quote. Now I finally get what Xander was trying to say in his Dadaist pep talk.

OK, I think you should come to my house and watch the movies again. And we can play Lego Star Wars on the PlayStation! It will be awesome.

Yay! You updated!
Also, I love Star Wars. But the truth is, I usually fall asleep while watching them.

I still love you.

We could have a Star Wars party just for you! And then we could watch the second trilogy, which I still haven’t seen.

Wait… there are people who actually say that Charmed is better than Buffy?!? That’s… not right.

Your Taco Bell-preferring friend should have been sho… er, castigated severely. Leaving during that scene is tantamount to blasphemy. Blasphemy, I tells you!
I can’t believe there are people who prefer Charmed to Buffy. No, wait, I can… *groans*

I’ve gotten that response from people too! Charmed better than Buffy?!? So absurd, I tend to be able to only manage a response of stuttering incoherently, flailing my arms about, gasping several times, hitting tabletops, andvfinally sputter out “Are you kidding me?” and end up generally being at such a loss for words, that the crazies in question start doing other things before I can convert them. I mean, there isn’t even a basis for comparison, so reasonable arguments are out the window.
I usually just cast these people off as having some sort of horrendous childhood trauma that has no doubt led them to a warped sense of good television and pray for them before bedtime.
